Obituary for Edith Butterworth (McCormick)

In loving memory – Edith passed away on the morning of March 17, 2023 at the Golden Manor in Timmins, Ontario at the age of 78. She was the beloved wife of Edwin Butterworth and mother of James (Vittoria) Butterworth and Tracy (Joel) Legasy. She will be deeply missed by her grandchildren, Kyra and Kyle Butterworth and Emily Legasy. She is pre-deceased by granddaughter Sydney Legasy, sister Karen Vernal, and her parents Opal and Edwin McCormick. She is also remembered by dear friend Rosanne MacQuarrie.

Edith was born On April 27, 1944 in New Brunswick before her family moved to Niagara on the Lake, Ontario. She met Edwin while in high school, and they married in 1963 while Edwin studied veterinary medicine at the University of Guelph and welcomed their first child the following year. They spent time in Chicago, Fort Erie, and Pickering, and had a second child before moving to Timmins in 1970, where they established the Timmins Animal Hospital out of the basement of their house. Edith was the practice manager of the clinic until her retirement.

Edith was a voracious reader who also enjoyed word puzzles, cooking and entertaining. She will be remembered by those who worked with her over the years for her business savvy, her attention to detail, and the way she treated every staff member at the animal hospital as if they were another member of the family. She had a quick wit and a dark sense of humour that is greatly missed during this difficult time.

The family extends their deepest gratitude to the staff at the Golden Manor for their excellent care during the final years of Edith’s life. Remembrance donations made to the Canadian Mental Health Association will be gratefully acknowledged. Private arrangements have been entrusted to Lessard-Stephens Funeral Home.
